Series Descriptions


 

Series 1- Correspondence The largest series of the Ed Jones Congressional Papers are the correspondence files. This series contains correspondence produced and received by congressman Jones during his tenure in the United States House of Representatives. The files contain letters from constituents, fellow congressmen and senators, as well as governors and Presidents from Nixon to Reagan. The letters deal with subjects from abortion to Vietnam as well as the impeachment of President Nixon.


Series 2 - Legislation Series 2 focuses on legislation. The collection mirrors the times to which they represent. Files can be found on a wide range of issues. Some of the areas of focus deal with agriculture, for which Jones was a champion. By the early 1970's the collections deals with the impeachment of President Nixon and the energy crisis of the mid 1970's. Many letters from constituents relate to the import footwear crisis of the late 1980's Included in the series are both House and Senate Resolution.


Sub-series 1 - Alphabetical Series 2.1 is made up of correspondence dealing with major issues of the times. The late 1960's pertain primarily to the Vietnam War. By the 1970's the war had ended and the Watergate Era had begun. Much legislation deals with the impeachment of President Nixon. After the resignation of Nixon focus returns to the daily needs of the nation. The mid 1970's brought about severe drought conditions for farmers and an oil shortage which lead to the energy crisis.

Sub-series 2 - House Resolutions Sub-series 2.2 contains house resolutions considered by congress during Jones tenure. Some of the more notable resolutions are the Agricultural Credit Act in 1977 and the Telecommunication Act of 1982. The files are arranged by resolution numbers and years.

Sub-series 3 - Legislative Information in Correspondence by Code Sub-series 2.3 contains legislative information by an interoffice coding system. The files are arranged in alphabetical order by year.

Sub-series 4 - Legislative Information in Correspondence by Subject Sub-series 2.4 is also made up of legislative information, but this sub-series is arranged in alphabetical order according to subjects. The files are also listed in order by year.

Sub-series 5 - Legislative Guides Sub-series 2.5 contains many guides and journals pertaining to Tennessee state issue, as well as Legislative Activity Guides. The guides are listed together is chronological order.

Sub-series 6 - Voting Records Sub-series 2.6 contains copies of legislation co-sponsored mainly during the 96th and 100thCongress. Also included are Congressman Jones individual voting records from 1971 to 1988. Listed on the voting records is how Jones voted on each resolution number.

Sub-series 7 - Books Sub-series 2.7 consist books dealing with subcommittee hearings to testimony and explanation of legislative acts.


Series 3 - Projects Series 3 pertains to projects within Jones congressional district. The files deal with the needs of individual communities. Among the files are applications and conformation of Community Development Block Grants and the over whelming problem of Blackbirds in certain areas of the district

Sub-series 1 - Counties Sub-series 3.1 is arranged in alphabetical order by county. The sub-series is further broken down by year. A wide range of subjects are covered dependent on the specific need of each individual county. Some of the overlapping concerns are funding from the Farmers Home Administration, lose of jobs and industry, and Community Development Block Grants.

Sub-series 2 - General (Miscellaneous) Series 3.2 deals with projects that affect the congressional district as a whole, but not the individual needs of each county. Subjects of concern range from Medicare to the Tennessee Valley Authority to the state university system.

Series 4 - Committees Series 4 focuses on the committees Congressman Jones served or chaired. Jones concentrated most of his efforts as a member of the House Committee on Agriculture. He was vert instrumental in the passage of many laws that directly benefitted the farmer. His seat on the House Committee on Agriculture lead to his chairmanship of the subcommittee on Conservation, Credit and Rural Development.

Sub-series 1 - Agriculture Sub-series 4.1 emphasizes the work done to help save the American farmer. They deal with topics from the creation of the Farm Credit Act and to the Rural Electric Administration Loan Program

Sub-series 2 - Conservation, Credit, and Rural Development A large portion of the sub-series is devoted to the Sliver Futures Market and the problems it caused with the price of silver in the 1980's. Other topics of interest range from soil and water conservation to the U.S.D.A.

Sub-series 3 - Services The sub-committee on services pertains to the inner workings of the Capital. Duties included the overseeing of the House Cafeteria, Beauty Shop and Barber Shop as well as the assigning of parking spaces for members of congress and guest.

Sub-series 4 - Procurement and Printing Procurement and printing subcommittee handled the monumental task of approving all documents that congress printed. Included in these publications were the annual Capital Historical Calendars.

Sub-series 5 - [Single Box] Democratic Caucus As a senior member of the Democratic party in Tennessee Congressman Jones served on the Democratic Caucus. Responsibilities ranged from Polling Data to Vote Ratings.


Series 5 -Public Relations Series 5 encompasses the many other duties of a Congressman that correspondence, legislation and committee work don't cover. You will find topics as varied as invitations to weekly radio addresses.

Sub-series 1 - Invitations Invitations are filed on an accepted or declined bases. They are in broken down by month and year.

Sub-series 2 - [Single Box] Academy One of the privilege the Congressman has is the appointment of a young person to one of the four service academies. Candidates names are arranged alphabetically followed by the class from which they would graduate.

Sub-series 3 - Speeches Sub-series 3 consist of many of the Speeches, Congressman Jones made throughout this tenure. Speeches include local service organizations to national conferences and Commencement address for high schools and universities.
Sub-series 4 - Ed Jones Reports The Ed Jones Report is a weekly publication sent from the Congressman to local constituents. The files are arranged by the date of publication or by subject. The subjects usually pertained to what ever was happening on the national or local political front. A few deal with international affairs.

Sub-series 5 - Press Releases Sub-series 5 houses press releases issued by Congressman Jones office. The press releases cover a wide range of subjects, from service academy appointments to community block grant awards.

Sub-series 6 - Radio Scripts The radio scripts of sub-series 6 are the written record of Congressman Jones weekly radio addresses. They are arranged in order by the date of which they were aired.

Sub-series 7 - Audio Tapes A few of the actual audio tapes of Congressman Jones still exist, they are in order by date. Unfortunately, the date of the tapes do not correspond with the written radio scripts from the previous sub-series. There are gaps in the dates.

Sub-series 8 - Photos Sub-series 8 is a collection of photographs taken over the 20 year tenure of Congressman Jones. The subjects of the photographs range from constituent visits to pages and interns that worked within the congressman's office.

Sub-series 9 - [Single Box] Miscellaneous News Clippings Sub-series 9 is a collection of loose news clippings dealing with various topics of interest to Congressman Jones.

Sub-series 10 - [Single Box]Guest Registration Books Each visitor to the congressional office was asked to sign in. The guest registration books are a record of those visits.

Sub-series 11 - Scrap Books The scrap books chronicle the career of Congressman Jones. The books contain note worthy events in the congressman's career.
