International Student Checklist

Are you ready to join the UT Martin Family? Here’s a checklist to help you with your next steps!

Make visa appointment

The Department of State issues visas at U.S. Embassies and Consulates. The visa is for entry. It allows you to travel to the United States for a specific purpose. Find the U.S. embassy or consulate nearest to you. First, you need to complete this list:

  • Pay $350 I-901 SEVIS fee. Print the receipt.*
  • Complete the online Form DS-160 visa application. Print the confirmation page.
  • Pay the $185 visa application fee. Print the receipt.
  • Obtain acceptable photographs
  • Schedule an appointment for your visa interview

*Note: SEVIS occasionally updates their pricing. Prices listed on this page may not be accurate.

  • The Form I-20 issued by the University of Tennessee at Martin
  • The printed Form DS-160, “Online Nonimmigrant Visa Application,” confirmation page
  • Passport valid for at least six months after you plan to enter the United States
  • Two-inch by two-inch photo of yourself (learn more about photo requirements)
  • Receipt for your $185 visa application fee payment
  • Receipt for your $350 I-901 SEVIS fee payment

You should make your appointment for your visa interview as soon as possible. We can send you your I-20 by scanned copy.

The visa interview is your opportunity to tell the consulate or embassy officer about your plans while in the United States and what you will do when you have completed your studies. They may ask you for this additional documentation.

  • Your admission letter from UT Martin. The Form I-20 verifies this.
  • Your financial ability to pay for school and living expenses (the amount shown on Form I-20). You should bring original copies of the financial documents you provided to UTM for proof. These documents are evidence of the preparations you have made to finance your stay (e.g., bank statements).
  • You are prepared for the academic program in which you plan to enroll. It is good to bring copies of your high school transcripts, any certificates you have received, etc.
  • Your stay in the United States is temporary (you do not intend to stay in the US forever)
  • The official may be interested in how you intend to use the education you receive in the United States when you return home.

If you are granted the visa, please email international@utm.edu and tell us the good news!
