Courses Experience Funding Students

UTM in Siena is an affordable three-month program where students earn a semester’s worth of credits while living in medieval Siena, Italy, immersed in Tuscan culture without sacrificing time toward graduation. Courses are integrated with the history and culture of Italy, giving students unique hands-on experiences and a broader perspective on life and academics.

UTM Students

Global Leadership Summer 2025

In summer of 2025, join UTM in Siena to learn about leadership from a global perspective. This course of study will include our cultural immersion course (3 credits) and a leadership course (3 credits), both of which will work together to help you better understand what leadership looks like in different international contexts. Excursions to Rome and Florence are included in this 4 week program (May 21 - June 23, 2025).

General Education Fall 2025

During Fall 2025, we will offer a full semester of General Education courses, taught in English and integrated with the culture of Siena and of Italy. The following is a tentative list of course titles (along with their UT Martin designation) that will be offered. Course descriptions can be found by visiting our courses page and should be consulted together with your academic advisor. Syllabuses are available upon request.

  • SOC 431: Urban Sociology (Required cultural immersion course)
  • MUS 112: Music for our time
  • ENGL 271: World Literature
  • BIOL 110/110L: Introductory Cell Biology and Genetics 
  • ZOOL 251/251L: Human Anatomy and Physiology I
  • MMSC 230: Public Speaking
  • HPMG 300: International Culture, Diet and Cuisine

Cost

Summer 2025 will cost students $5,900 est. (Airfare included). Regular students of the University of Tennessee at Martin wishing to study abroad with UTM in Siena in the fall will receive a substantial discount, costing the students around $12,000.

Price includes:

  • Tuition
  • Housing
  • Some textbooks
  • All university and course fees
  • Museum entry and excursion fees
  • Airfare from Nashville to Rome
  • All other transportation costs

As all costs will be charged to your Banner account, any financial aid you receive during a regular semester at UTM can be used toward the trip, including Hope Scholarships, Chancellor’s Awards, Dean’s Scholarships, Pell Grants, Stafford and PLUS loans, and university and state employee tuition waivers.

In addition, every UTM student is eligible to apply for an SGA Student Scholarship through the Center for International Education. For more information on this award, click here.

If you wish to participate in any of our upcoming programs, please reach out the Director Joseph Ostenson (siena@utm.edu) with your interests.

If you are a student at one of our sister campuses, participating in UTM in Siena will require regular communication between UTM and your home institution. Before applying, visit your university’s education abroad office and your academic advisor and inform them that you are considering studying abroad with us. They will be able to assist you in preparing to study abroad, especially in ensuring that the credits you earn with us will transfer to your home institution and count toward your graduation. Please have them email siena@utm.edu or reach out to UTM in Siena Director Joseph Ostenson with any questions.

As a TSU student, participating in UTM in Siena will require regular communication between UTM and TSU. Before applying, reach out to Mr. Mark Brinkley , Director of International Education at TSU, and express your desire to participate in our program. Work closely with your academic advisor as well to ensure that the credits you earn with us will transfer to TSU and count toward your graduation. Please have them email siena@utm.edu or reach out to UTM in Siena Director Joseph Ostenson with any questions.
